An evening, at your pace

A quieter bedtime setup: choose your audio, then put the screen away

By , creator of Hushbreath ·

An evening ritual does not have to become another task to complete. Start with a setup that asks less of you: choose where you want to sit or lie down, decide whether you want sound, and put the screen somewhere you will not keep checking it.

Make the choices before you begin

Choose a place where you can sit or lie comfortably. Decide whether you want spoken guidance, a background sound, or quiet. Choose the audio before putting your phone down, set a comfortable volume and check that it is playing through the speaker or headphones you intended to use.

You do not need to keep searching for the perfect sound once you have started. If you use headphones, keep the playback controls within easy reach so you can pause or stop whenever you want.

Prepare the phone, then leave the screen alone

Use your phone’s usual notification controls if you want fewer interruptions, while keeping any essential calls available. Choose those settings before you begin rather than changing them throughout your pause.

Place the phone somewhere stable and within reach, outside your direct line of sight. If you intend to lock the screen, make sure your chosen audio supports playback while locked. That depends on the app you use.

Keep the ritual small

Start with an amount of time that fits your evening. There is no score to reach and no need to finish a programme. If following an instruction feels uncomfortable, stop and return to your normal breathing. You can change your mind about the audio or finish for the evening.

The purpose of this setup is simply to make a chosen pause easier to begin. It does not require you to force a feeling or meet a target.

Setting up audio in Hushbreath

Hushbreath’s public App Store listing, checked on 30 September 2026 for version 2.0.1, describes twenty evening breathing rituals, a female or male narrator, and rain, waves or ambient backgrounds. You can also choose voice only and adjust voice and background volume separately.

Choose your voice and language in Settings before beginning a ritual. The listing confirms English, Polish, German, French and Spanish guidance, audio included in the app for offline listening, and playback with the screen locked. Pick a ritual, begin playback and put the screen aside when you are ready.

One complete five-minute “Sigh of relief” session is available once without purchasing a subscription. Further access requires a monthly or annual subscription, or a lifetime purchase. This is not a subscription free trial. Check the current local offer in the app before purchasing.

A small checklist for tonight

Choose your place. Choose audio or quiet. Adjust the volume. Set notifications the way you need them. Put the phone within reach and the screen out of view. You can prepare just one of these things tonight and leave the rest simple.
