You open an evening recording, but hear nothing. Before restarting everything, separate three questions: has playback actually started, where should the sound go, and which volume are you changing? The sequence below is a practical troubleshooting approach. It can help you describe the problem clearly; it cannot identify every cause or guarantee a fix. Use audio you already have access to, without making a purchase just to test sound.
1. Describe what the player is doing
Look at the controls and any message on screen. A paused recording, an access message and an apparently playing recording with no audible sound are different observations. If a progress indicator is available, note whether it advances. Do not assume that a moving indicator proves that the audio is reaching your headphones. Write down the recording name and the point at which you noticed the silence.
2. Choose the output before increasing the volume
Check which headphones or speaker you intend to use and whether that is the output selected on the device. For example, headphones left nearby may be the route you selected earlier. Start with a low volume when switching outputs, then adjust gradually. In a shared room, warn others before trying the phone speaker. Keep the same recording for this check so that a change of content does not confuse the comparison.
3. Adjust media volume during playback
Apple explains that the iPhone side buttons adjust media volume while audio is playing. Use that distinction when checking sound rather than relying on the loudness of your ringtone. If Hushbreath settings are accessible in your version, also check the separate voice and background levels: the public app description lists these controls. Change only one level at a time and note which sound, if any, becomes audible.
4. Make one controlled comparison
If the recording remains silent, try the same accessible audio through another available output. Then, if needed, try a familiar recording in another app using the same output. Record simple observations: “other audio works through these headphones” or “this recording is audible on the speaker.” These comparisons narrow your description; they do not by themselves prove an app defect or a broken accessory. Avoid repeatedly raising the volume between attempts.
5. Stop the checks and prepare a useful report
If the cause remains unclear, stop playback and collect the device model, system version, app version, recording name, selected output and the comparisons you made. Include the exact on-screen message if there was one. Hushbreath’s support page provides the contact route. You do not need to reset the device, reinstall the app or buy access as part of this checklist. If you simply want to end the evening, leave troubleshooting for another time.
